International Clinical Trials Day 2023
We take a look at our UK-wide platform clinical trial for MND: - MND-SMART
On May 20th, we celebrate Clinical Trials Day. This commemorates the day in 1747 when James Lind, who was born in Edinburgh, started the first known controlled trial. His study compared various treatments for scurvy, which was a prevalent disease among sailors in the British Royal Navy.
MND-SMART was launched in January 2020 with the first recruitment site opening at The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in Edinburgh. Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, MND-SMART has opened 19 sites in all four home nations of the United Kingdom and has recruited nearly 500 trial participants, making it the largest-ever UK MND clinical trial.
Using a pioneering trial design, MND-SMART is an adaptive multi-arm, multi-stage clinical trial (MAMS trial). MND-SMART is currently testing three drugs against a single placebo.
