Prof Gareth B. Miles

Professor of Neuroscience
University of St Andrews

Professor Miles’ laboratory studies how the spinal cord controls movement by analysing the electrical activity of individual spinal neurons and the connections they form with each other. His group also uses animal and human stem cell-based models to examine changes in the properties of neurons and their connections that occur due to diseases such as MND. Through his research, he hopes to explain why motor neurons selectively die in MND, and to reveal targets for new treatments of MND.

Professor Miles began his research career in New Zealand where he completed his PhD. He then undertook postdoctoral training at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada before beginning a lectureship at the University of St Andrews in 2007. He is currently Professor of Neuroscience and Assistant Vice-Principal (Dean of Science) at the University of St Andrews.
