Owen Kantelberg

PhD student
School of Chemistry & UK Dementia Research Institute, University of Edinburgh

Owen works as a PhD student in the Edinburgh Single Molecule Biophysics group led by Dr Mathew Horrocks. Owen’s research focuses on ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease. He is particularly interested in discovering the role of a very common event in the cells of almost everyone with ALS, the aggregation or 'clumping' of a protein called TDP-43. To study this, Owen uses super high-power microscopy.

Owen studied Biochemistry in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and completed a six-month internship in the University of New South Wales’ (UNSW) EMBL node for single-molecule science, Sydney, Australia.
