Holding a Beetle Drive is a truly unique fundraising game that is designed for dozens of people to play at the same time. It's simple to host a Beetle Drive and importantly it's great fun!
By supporting our work through fundraising, you are helping researchers understand the causes and mechanisms of motor neuron disease and how it progresses, and our aim to help develop discoveries that will slow, stop and eventually reverse the devastating effects of MND.
Step by step guide to holding a Beetle Drive
- Find and book a room to hold your Beetle Drive. This could be a community hall, church hall, seminar room or your living-room depending on your numbers
- Make sure the room has enough tables and chairs available - each table would have ideally 4 to 6 players
- Decide on a reasonable attendance fee
- Decide on how many rounds you want the Beetle Drive to last
- Ask local businesses and/or friends for a few prizes (you could have 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes and wooden-spoon prize for the person who comes last!)
- You'll need a supply of dice, paper and pencils for this 'old school' fundraiser in aid of MND research
- Make sure you have a couple of volunteers to help you on the day
- Organise some refreshments - coffee/teas, home baking
- Download our Beetle Drive rules and score sheet (pdf file).
- You can set-up a JustGiving page at the Euan MacDonald Centre JustGiving page .
- Remember to share your page ahead of your Beetle Drive. Alternatively, the QR code on the attached score sheet links to the Euan MacDonald Centre donation page.
Running the Beetle Drive
- Ideally, gather 4 to 6 players at each table. Each player receives a score sheet and a pencil. The team usually share a dice, but it can be played with a dice each. The youngest player starts the game by rolling the dice first, and play continues clockwise.
Rolling the Dice
- Players take turns rolling the dice and drawing parts of the beetle based on the number rolled. Each player must roll a six to start.
Shouting 'BEETLE!'
- The first player to complete their beetle shouts "BEETLE!" and the round ends. All players then count their drawn parts and score 1 point for each part completed.
Scoring
- The player who completed their beetle scores the maximum points for that round (14 points if all parts are drawn). Other players score based on the number of parts they have drawn.
Moving Tables
- After each round, players may move to a different table to play with new opponents, adding a social element to the game.
- The person with the highest score moves clockwise. The person with the lowest score moves anti-clockwise. If two people on the table have the same highest or lowest score, then the youngest person moves.
Winning the Game
-
After a predetermined number of rounds, players total their scores. The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, tied players can roll the die, and the highest number wins.
