Method of fundraising

Busking to support MND research

Why did you decide to fundraise?

My inspiration to raise money for motor neuron disease came after I met some people living with MND and I realised how terrible the disease is for them to live with, so I wanted to help and I thought the only way I knew how was to raise money through music and by busking, playing my oboe in Edinburgh.

MND-SMART is a clinical trial that might find a cure, and I wanted to be a part of helping this happen.

How did you raise the money?

I busked with my oboe at the Mound and Portobello beach in Edinburgh. I played Believer by Imagine Dragons, Vida La Vida and Clocks by Coldplay, Burlesque, a Minuet by Mozart, and The Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book. I played to lots of members of the public including tourists and people visiting Edinburgh. Many of them came to speak to me and I worked out which pieces of music suited different types of people.

Fundraising wisdom:

Lots of things happen and you need to go with the flow when you are busking in public. Enjoy making a difference and raising awareness. I didn’t think that so many people would donate money and speak to me. I was surprised at how many people donated without even speaking to me.

An online way of donating using a QR code worked really well as people don’t carry much money around.
