Arpan is a practising consultant neurologist and clinician-scientist whose research focuses on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease (ALS/MND). He trained in neurology in Oxford and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, before moving to the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit in Dundee to develop a research programme investigating the role of cell signalling in ALS/MND.

His interest into the molecular mechanisms of ALS/MND developed during his MRC/MND Association Lady Edith Wolfson Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the UK Dementia Research Institute, University of Edinburgh, supervised by Professor Siddharthan Chandran and Professor Giles Hardingham. His PhD examined dysfunctional axonal homeostasis in C9ORF72 human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived motor neurons, demonstrating a causal link between axonal dysfunction and mitochondrial bioenergetic failure.

Arpan’s work aims to uncover disease mechanisms in ALS/MND and identify pathways that may ultimately inform new therapeutic strategies.
